How To Install WordPress On Localhost By Using XAMPP

How To Install WordPress On Localhost By Using XAMPP

One of the most popular platform, WordPress is already powering up over one-third of the entire websites. Day by day people are entering the community. WordPress can be installed on localhost. Now what is localhost and why to install WordPress on localhost? Localhost is basically your computer as a host. This means that you host the WordPress files on your computer instead of directly hosting it on a paid host services.

What do you need?

You need to download WordPress package and XAMPP server. XAMPP is basically a package which runs on Windows with Apache server based on MySQL and PHP. So you can run a MySQL database connected to PHP script on your localhost using XAMPP.

Choose the XAMPP download which suits your architecture (32 bit or 64 bit). Once you download XAMPP, install it with default settings. After installation, you can find XAMPP at C:\\Xampp

How to install WordPress locally on your computer

WordPress installing on localhost is very easy. You have to follow some easy steps. You can not install WordPress directly on your computer. You have to create an environment then install WordPress to your computer.

Step 1. Download XAMPP Server

Go to the XAMPP’s official website. Select your operating system and click on download button.

By clicking download you can redirect to downloading page. Download the latest version which  one support on your computer.

You Can also download different version of XAMPP. By Clicking Download Menu

Step 2. Install & Run the XAMPP on Your PC

After downloading the software, you need to unzip it. When the file is ready, just select the Install button or click on it twice. Soon you will discover that the installation process has began.

  • After clicking next button , you will see some checkboxes these are already marked. You only need MySQL and phpMyAdmin, so unmark all the others.

  • After intallition , you would see a welcome notice. That means your installation process is working perfectly & ready to use.

Once installed, you’ll be asked whether you would like to start the XAMPP Control Panel, which provides an interface for running your localhost environment. Leave this option ticked and click Finish.

The Control Panel will automatically open, but if you unchecked the option in the previous window, you can go to the XAMPP folder on your computer and open XAMPP Control Panel instead.

If you have any antivirus software installed in your PC, you may see a security alert like this. Don’t worry, check any of the given networks and go ahead by clicking on the Allow access button.

Running XAMPP

Now, let’s see if everything works smoothly. Congratulations! You have completed the XAMPP installation process!

Both services are running fine. Excellent!

You can check if your new local server is installed by visiting http://localhost in your browser.

Step 3. Setting Up Your MySQL Database

Before we install WordPress, we need a database.

In your XAMPP Control Panel, click the Admin button in the MySQL section.

A new browser window will automatically open with the phpMyAdmin interface.

Click on Databases near the top-left, and you’ll be prompted to create a new database. I’ve called mine “WP.”

When you’ve entered a name, click Create and close the window.

Step 4. Download WordPress Latest Version

Now is the time to create a database and start installing WordPress on localhost. To do that, you need to download the latest version of WordPress.

  • Go to the WordPress official website, click on Get WordPress button from the top right side. You will be redirected to a new page.
  • Now hit on Download WordPress button.

The download process might take a few moments to begin. You will get a zip file. Unzip the file and copy that for your next uses.

In order to get WordPress working with XAMPP, we need to unzip WordPress in the right folder. Go to the XAMPP folder on your computer and open the htdocs folder – C:/Program Files/XAMPP/htdocs.

Unzip WordPress into its own folder and rename it whatever you like. For consistency, I’m going to call this installation of WordPress “WP” to match the name of the database I just created.

Step 5. Install WordPress on Localhost

Open the WP folder where you saved WordPress, find the wp-config-sample.php file and rename it wp-config.php. Open the file and scroll down until you see the following lines:

These lines of code define the login details for your database:

  • Replace“database_name_here” with the name of your database, which in my case is “WP”
  • Replace “username_here” with “root” and leave “password_here” blank
  • Save the file and close it

Now we can get on with actually installing WordPress.

Open your browser and go to http://localhost/wp/

You should see the translation screen that comes before the famous five minute WordPress installation process.

Once you’ve chosen your language, continue onto the next screen and enter your username and password details. Click Install WordPress.

Click Install WordPress this button.

Your WordPress installation is now complete! Log In your chosen password.

Check out the Site

This is the time to check out your local site. How would it look like or how would it work? Give a check.

  • This is your backend dashboard or admin panel, from where you would control everything.

What is Plugin?

What is Plugin?

What is Plugin? Plugins are software additions that allow for the customization of computer programs, apps, and web browsers; as well as the customization of the content offered by websites. For example, if you wanted to watch a video on a website, you may need a plugin to play it because your browser doesn’t have the tools it needs. Plug-ins are commonly used in Internet browsers but also can be utilized in numerous other types of applications.

In a nutshell, you download and install plugins to make whatever software you are using more feature-rich. But, you probably are dying to know, how hard is it to install a plugin? The answer is: it depends.

Plugins are also all of the little add-ons that optimize the content you put out as an online creator. As the content consumer, they’re the extras that allow you to experience the internet in a myriad of ways that include images, sound, videos, and animation. Plugins are tools (bits of software) that expand what you can do with your WordPress site, without having to manually write or edit code. There is virtually no limit to what you can do with WordPress plugins – if you want to do it, there’s probably a plugin for it – from ecommerce to SEO, from design features to social media, from security to spam prevention.

WordPress History

The journey of WordPress started in 2003 when two developers, Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little, began to build a new blogging platform on top of a discontinued software called b2/cafeblog. Shortly after that project was abandoned, they decided to fork it and continue the development on their own terms.

They released the first version of WordPress (WordPress 1.0) in January 2004. It looked quite different from the feature-rich content management system that these days we know as WordPress. However, it already had most of the core features we still use today, such as the WordPress editor, a simple installation process, pretty permalinks, a user management system, comment moderation capabilities, and others.

Since 2004, WordPress has gone through an incredible transformation. Nowadays, the WordPress project is developed, managed, and maintained by a dedicated open-source community of thousands of worldwide members. They work remotely, many of them as volunteers, and meet in person at WordPress’ distributed conference called WordCamp. WordPress is still rapidly growing and a new version is released every 2 or 3 months. Each version adds new features and security updates to the platform.
